Here is a British tradition instilled in me since I was a Lil Minx. When you are finished eating, you place your knife and fork together, with the knife blade facing the fork. This is a non verbal signal that you are done, and the plate can be cleared. I hope to start a craze to sweep the Country,  have wait staff thanking me with free drinks and snacks galore, wink. As  I have earned it ! made their jobs easier, and less of “are you still working on that”"can I clear you plate”"are you done” etc.
